Well, it has been around 10 months since my last posting. Why do you ask? Well I hit the sweet spot of gadget-dom in which I had everything I wanted. Not top of the line stuff, but what I wanted. I had a projector with surround sound ($1000), a PS3 ($300), a computer that can play all current games well ($500), and an Android phone. So instead of looking for deals on stuff I really did not need or want, I decided to spend my time actually using my stuff. So now it is 10 months later. Has my gadget lust returned? Only for a new phone. I love my Motorola droid, but the thought of a dual core CPU, a 4"s-amoled screen, a front facing camera, 4G, and a better regular camera have given me a tiny bit of gadget lust. Ive been contemplating getting the Verizon version of the galaxy S when it comes out, but I am going to stick to my guns and wait for a quantum leap over my Motorola Droid, which can still run any android app or game. I am contemplating starting an Android blog as that is my current interest. It will not be news or prices as there are tons of these sites already but more of my personal musings about the state of the operating system, phones, apps, and games.

Cons: Largest and heaviest in group, 4.25 x 2.75" x 1.85" 9.8oz, widest angle is by far smallest of group, requires Sony memory sticks

Panasonic TZ5 $220.

Reason to buy: Best wide angle lens with 10x zoom for good telephoto shots. 720p Video. Gorgeous high resolution display.

Pros: Great outdoor photo quality, 10x 28-280 lens for very wide shots and second largest telephoto range, great image stabilization,720p video with zoom while shooting video, 3" beautiful high resolution screen (2x more pixels than others), fits in pocket even if larger than ultra-compacts. TZ5 wins super zoom comparison test.
Cons: Larger and heavier than ultra-compacts 4.07" x 2.33" x 1.44" 7.5oz. (but smaller and lighter than HS20), needs flash for low light shooting, noisy over ISO 400, few manual controls(but very good auto modes).

Ultra Compacts: Smallest cameras available, but 5x zoom max

Panasonic FX500 $200.

Reason to buy: Ultra wide angle lens, 720p video, touch screen, full manual control option.

Pros: 5x zoom is top for category, 720p video, large 3" touch screen--touch area to auto focus and tracks that area (ie moving child), touch area to zoom on playback, touch full manual controls, ultra wide 25-125mm lens, good outdoor image quality, great image stabilization, compact 3.7" x 2.2" x .9" 6.2oz., Quick Menu function keeps most-used features a button press away.
Cons: 25mm ultra wide angle means can't zoom in as much on distant objects, indoor images somewhat noisy for 8x10 prints over 200 ISO.

Personal Update: I just decided to purchasd this camera as an upgrade to my Fuji F20. It doesn't have the 10x zoom that I really wanted or great high ISO performance, but the combination of the wide angle lens, manual controls, great image stabilization, and 720p video made it the best choice for me as someone looking for a prosumer type camera in a small package. If I didn't want manual controls, I would have gone with the Fuji F100.

Fuji F100 $165 after $100 rebate.

Reason to buy: best low light/low noise shooting, wide angle lens, price

Pros: 5x zoom, by far least image noise of any camera, unusable up to 800 ISO without much image noise so good for low light compared to other ultra compacts, very good picture quality, wide angle 28-140mm, wide dynamic range feature (allows more shadow detail in high contrast images), very low price after rebate, manual white balance allows perfect white balance with a white sheet of paper to determine WB.
Cons: Image stabilization works but not as effective as others. Requires rebate for price. Slightly smaller screen that others, long delay night shots hampered by ISO restrictions.

Canon SD790 $190.

Reason to buy: Outdoor image quality, Canon name and quality.

Pros: Best outdoor image quality in ultra-compact group(slight win over F100), very good image stabilization, 3" screen, Canon quality and name, good price
Cons: 480p video max, small focal range with 3x zoom 35-105 lens (no wide angle and smallish telephoto), 100-200 ISO shooting only for low image noise photos

I will probably add more later feel free to add any suggestions. I did not include any small Sony or Casio ultra compact cameras as I hate the tiny shutter button on them (see links below if you want to do research on those brands). There are many reviews of each of these cameras. Projector Buying Guide July Update

I just updated the Digital projector buying guide with some new 1080p models. Here it is.

These are the projectors you want to and where to buy them. Please also read my post on what to look for in a new projector.

720p Projectors

$590 Refurb Acer PH530. Get an HD projector for under $600. Reviews on the AVS forum by users are favorable. Projectorreviews.com says it's good for money.

$720 Mitsubishi HC1500 is sharper and much brighter than the PH530. If you want DLP and need a very bright projector for some daytime viewing, this is your best choice. Recent price drop from $900 makes this a great deal (use code "AFL5" after you add it to your cart). Review

$800 Sharp DT-510 A recent price drop makes this the projector to buy under $1000 if you don't need lens shift of an LCD. The HC1500 is brigher, however, if you have some ambient light.

$800 Benq W500 is a 720p LCD with lens shift. If $800 is your budget and you want lens shift, this is the way to go. What sets this projector apart is it's internal Silicon Optix HQV scalar/deinterlacer. It will upscale 480i to 720p incredibly well. This projector also accepts 1080p/24hz which is the native signal of HD-DVD and Blue-ray. It will then downscale to 720p. 24hz is the speed at which the film is captured by the camera so the image will be very smooth in a panning scene with a lot of camera motion. $1025 Panasonic AX200 Perfect LCD for those who see rainbows with DLP. It's also the brightest projector under $2000 and comes with Panasonic's smoothscreen technology which eliminates screen door. Review and another.
$1089 If you want a 720p LCD projector Visual Apex has one great deal. The initial price is $1189, but there is a $100 mail in rebate which brings the cost down to $1089. Then they throw in a free dust cover and a free second bulb worth $350. If you factor in the cost of the bulb and the cover, you end up paying $750 for the projector. Why get this over the DLP alternatives? Large 2x zoom, lens shift, and no rainbows for people who see them. Review.

1080p Projectors

1080p Comparison Test This is a very comprehensive comparison test of most 1080p projectors on the market. Make sure to check out the comparison reviews on the last page

$1600 (after $600 in rebates) The Sanyo Z2000 is the new Budget King of 1080p. Review

$1850 The Epson Home Cinema 1080 will give you better contrast and brightness than the z2000, but not nearly as good contrast as the much more expensive 1080UB. Like at 1080p LCDs has a 2x zoom and verticle and horizontal lens shift for easy set up.

$2100 Mistubishi HC5500. This LCD has better blacks than the non "UB" Epson 1080, but is not quite as bright. It is also very sharp. It has a high end HQV processor for upscaling and deinterlacing which is great for SD-DVDs. Probably not quite as much "pop" as the Benq, but a bigger zoom and horizontal lens shift make it more flexible.
$2100 The Benq W5000 is the best bang for the buck under 3k. It ties for the best image quality and brightness under 3k, but is less flexible in terms of zoom and lens shift than it's LCD/LCOS competitors (it does have some verticle lens shift thought). It originally had some image noise problems which have been fixed with updated firmware.
$2600 The Panasonic AE-2000u is a much improved update to last year's AE-1000u. Has smoothscreen technology for those few who are bothered by screendoor effect with other 1080p projectors. Review

$2650 Sony VW40. The only LCOS projector under 3k. Rates minutely behind the 1080UB, but it really comes down to personal preference. A top pick.

$2700 The Epson 1080P UB. Brighter and much better contrast than the non-UB model. This is the projector to beat in the price range. Make sure convergence is checked by the store you buy from. Very close to the JVC-RS1 in perfermance at a much lower cost.

$3400 Mitsubishi HC6000 A super sharp LCD with very good contrast. Much improved over the HC5000. Reviews here and here

$3650 Sony VW60 comes very close to the JVC RS1 in performance and costs $800 less.

$4,400 The JVC RS1x has it all. You can spend a lot more for a lesser projector 1080p, very bright, very sharp, beautiful color, very high contrast and lens shift. If you have the cash, this is THE projector to get. It is based on LCOS technology which is an advanced form of LCD.

$4800 Benq 20000 is very close in picture quality to the RS2 but has some digital noise which may bother some viewers. Review.

$6000 JVC RS2 improves on the excellent black levels of the RS1 to get as close to CRT as any projector under $10k.

Misfire Check!
